Parasail
Spinnaker... |
Check out
the video at the
Parasailor
Website! |
|
After being in the Mediterranean for a year
- and realizing it either really blows
or...well...it doesn't - we realized quickly we
needed a light wind sail. So, we picked up our
new spinnaker in Malta in 2007.
|
We've sailed the Parasail
Spinnaker every since, and really love the ease and
performance! It's a great light
wind sail (5 to 15 knots). We haven't tried it in
heavier than 18 knot winds or closer to the wind (about
100°), although it's made for up to
25 knots at 60° degrees (covering Codes 1-4 below).
|
We like to raise the spinnaker when the wind
is around 120°s or so. Using the snuffer\sock,
it's very easy to handle and "usually" goes
up and comes down without a hitch. Due to
the Lagoons rigging (no actual backstay)
we tend to fly it with the main raised or
reefed to provide additional support.
This also makes it very easy to douse when
the winds pick up (by using the main to
shadow the Spi). |
This Spi is a
little small for a Lagoon 440 (120sqm), which could
easily handle up to a 140sqm spinnaker -
but the price was great, and it performs
very well - easily our best performing sail! |

Electrical
System (12v, 110v & 220v)... |
Twixter
has been upgraded to provide 12v (standard), 110v
(US) and 220v (EU) for power anywhere in the
world. There are also 12v, 110v & 220\230v outlets
wired throughout the boat. There are 5 Tudor 140amp house
batteries (along with 2 Tudor 140amp Starter batteries for
the engines), all connected to shore and/or
generator power through 2 (primary & secondary) battery
chargers. all systems are monitored by a
digital MasterVolt BTN Monitor and secondary analog
volt meter. |
ONAN 5kva

Read:
ONAN Manual,

Cruising Kit |
We're very happy with the ONAN generator. We
run it for a couple hours each day while at
anchor, which charges our 700amp bank to
100% (roughly 7%/hr charge-rate at 82%) -
while we run all the standard appliances! ;)
The Lagoon installation had a few problems,
but once we ironed them out, it has
performed very well! |
|
Warning: You should really get
the "Cruising Kit" (or stock you own
spare parts).
The Impellors and other spare parts are a little
hard to find (and very specific to the
model). So, when you're in the middle of
nowhere, you can change the Impellor, belt
and oil on you own! |
Mass-Combi Inverter\Charger
Read:
MassCombi Manual |
We chose the MassCombi as our primary for a couple reasons.
It handles the most important functions very
well: battery charging, supplying 230v
power, auto-switching and the use of
extended AC loads.
It works very well with any shore connection,
generator or batteries. I also like the
aspect that I can plug into it (via CAT5)
and download the usage statistics to a
spreadsheet to see how the charger and
batteries are performing. |

MasterVolt - Masterlink BTN III Monitor
Read:
Masterlink BTM Quick Reference,
User Manual |
I highly recommend the Masterlink monitor.
It does a great job monitoring all 3 battery
banks, and is configurable in a number of
ways to better utilize charging time and
rate. It is much more accurate than
the analog monitors! |

E-Series Navionics... |

Raymarine or
Pochon! |
Raymarine was our primary choice for all our
Navionics. We chose the 'basic" option from
lagoon (which included the autopilot and tri-data),
and then contracted for the rest to be installed in
La Rochelle (by Pochon

great guys!). |

E80 Chart Plotter
Read:
E80 User Manual,
E80 Install Manual |
We chose the Raymarine E80, and placed it on
the fly-bridge. This turned out to be
a GREAT idea. Most people choose to
put it (or the E120) downstairs at the Nav
Console. However, we spend almost all
our time on the fly-bridge (we really love
it). And I networked the E80
downstairs. |
|
So, we have a remote consol (standard SVGA
21'), networked to an HSB2 hub (CAT5)
downstairs, which when linked to my wireless
DLINK hub, gives any computer with the
RayTech RNS software access from anywhere on
the boat (Radar, Chart Plotter, Everything)

Even though we don't use it much, it's good
to know that we can steer the boat from
anywhere with a touch of a button. |

Yanmar Engines

Twixter has twin Yanmar 54hp engines. We
chose the Yanmar engines based on
availability for parts and service
worldwide. These engines have just
over 2500hrs with zero operational
problems. We have had no problems
finding authorized Yanmar service reps, and
have them serviced regularly every 250
hours. |

Yanmar Sail
Drives (SD50)... |
Watch the
Maintenance Videos! |
The Yanmar engines are equipped with Yanmar
Sail Drives (model SD50). These
SD's have preformed very well. We
recently had the seals and o-rings replaced
due to water ingress in the port SD.
|
|
Replacing the seals is a very simple process
(but does have to be completed while
hauled-out). The seals should be
replaced annually at every haul out! |
It is extremely important to
anti-foul your SD's. Ensure that you
provide a good primer base-coat (we use
Varlux) prior to painting (anti-foul
w/o a base could deteriorate your SD's!).
Lagoon DOES NOT do this, even when you
purchase the anti-fouling option! Many boats
are simply dropped without SD protection... |
We dive the SD's and clean them regularly (every
couple months). Making sure the
anodes (right) are clean and in good
shape. It is also important to clean
the water intake vents very well to insure
good flow (they get blocked very easily
by barnacles and debris). |

Schenker Watermaker... |
Check out the
Smart 60 L/h! |
|
The Schenker watermaker is pretty nice for
the price (you can get much better units,
but they cost 2 to 3 times the price). We
can’t complain; it’s served us well for
almost 3-years now. However, keep in mind,
it does require some attention when running
(it’s not a “self-contained”
flip-the-switch-and-go unit). For example,
you need to run it for a few minutes to
flush it before you switch it over to the
tanks, and then flush it again once you’re
done. Some units do all this for you. It
requires minimal maintenance (if you run it
every week or so), and you can usually pick
up standard 5 and 25 micron filters at just
about any large hardware store in the EU
cheap (around $8/ea). We change them every
couple months, and keep a few on the shelf.
The 12v (20amp) unit is nice, so we can run
it just about any time (even though we
usually only run it when convenient while
underway). We pump directly into our 3
tanks, and the water is a better quality
than any tap! |
